The winner was adjudged to be Mark Anderson (alias Erley Turk) for his article "Racing Goes Back to its Roots - Thoroughbred Stars Make their Third Annual Pilgrimage to Dubai for 'Horse of the Year' Honours"

Mark won this competition because we felt his article was highly original and witty - it was also extremely well researched, showing an unusual depth of knowledge of the history of racing and breeding. These elements were seamlessly incorporated in an article that brilliantly conveyed the occasion (i.e. The Dubai World Cup) and the personalities involved.

It was also a very well structured article, complete with an introduction which instantly commanded attention, and a description of the day in question which left you with the feeling that you, the reader, were there sharing the experience. For those of you who are unaware of the beginnings of the thoroughbred horse, the pseudonym 'Erley Turk' may sound mysterious but in fact the article was skilfully brought to a conclusion with its explanation … …

Upon learning that he was to be announced the 'Writer of the Year' Mark said, "It is a wonderful honour, especially taking into account the many fine articles submitted by 'fellow' amateur writers! What a fun opportunity 'Joy' has given to us who would otherwise never be able to see our written feelings, experiences and thoughts about horses in print."

Well done Mark, and congratulations! Mark's winning article is reprinted here or just click on the next graphic at the bottom of this page.

Mark Anderson is American, currently based in Bahrain where he lives with his wife Julie and young daughter Sarah. He has a lifetime interest in horse racing which has led him to visit major race meetings in Europe and the Middle East, as well as the USA. We await his next move with interest!

Mark's prize is £100 GBP ($160 USD) or Field Galleries vouchers to the value of £150 GBP ($240 USD). He has yet to decide!

We are looking for properly structured articles - obviously well written, but showing originality, whether in terms of the subject matter or the way in which it is expressed. In short, be yourself!
