RACING SECTION

The Derby by Mark Anderson
A brief history of the world's premier classic focusing on the unusual, colourful and sometimes unscrupulous events that have often surrounded it. The breadth of personalities, both human and equine, who have been associated with this, one of the great events in the sporting calendar, have often passed into legend. This is their story - combined with some intriguing historical 'trivia'.

The Judge and the Sex Machine by Terry Clark
Our correspondent casts his expert eye over the chief contenders for classic glory at Epsom - with added pointers for Royal Ascot. One of Newmarket's foremost stable lads, 'the judge', has had close association with classic winners in the past and this year, yet again, he has high hopes of adding to his amazing record.

Australia's Autumn Racing Carnival by Bronwen Healey
The racing season in Australia comes to a wonderful climax with top class racing in Melbourne and Sydney, with some outstanding performances by the likes of Intergaze, Belle du Jour and the public's favourite, Sunline, amongst others.

America's Chasers : A Busy Season at Home and Abroad by Laurel Scott Duncan
The highlights of the US Spring 'Chasing scene including action in Carolina; the Atlantic Steeplechase; Ninepins' journey to Japan; Pinkie Swear takes the Iroquois Steeplechase; the Novices Triple Crown and Priceless Room triumphs over timber.

EVENTING

Badminton 2000: A King Reclaims the British Eventing Crown by Helen Revington
Riders from 15 countries competed at this year's great three day event, many of whom have their sights firmly fixed on the Olympics later this year. There were thrills and spills - luckily with no major harm done - and a long overdue British 'clean sweep'.

SHOWS
Royal Windsor Horse Show by Sue Wingate
This is one of the great horse shows. A unique event, both modern and yet traditional, favoured by its prestigious location and the top quality competition in all aspects of the horse world - showing, carriage-driving, show jumping and marvellous displays. This year's show was a great success with its 'new look' layout.
Show Jumping at Royal Windsor by Sue Wingate
This is the Show where many of the country's top riders reintroduced their horses to the 'outdoor' circuit. Nick Skelton made a great comeback and the Irish trounced the English in the inaugural Anglo-Irish Challenge.
The Asprey & Garrard International Carriage Driving Grand Prix by Sue Wingate
Holland's Ysbrand Chardon, reigning World Champion, defeated a top class international field to take this prize for the third time - but there were other encouraging performances with the World Championships in mind later this year.
Bennie Gosschalk - Holland's Rising Star by Sue Wingate
Ysbrand Chardon may be Holland's current Carriage Driving Champion, but here could be another one in the making. Bennie, still at university, is working his way up the ladder of success in the Pairs division, thanks to his own talent and dedication - not to mention the support of his entire family!

THE PRACTICAL HORSEMAN

Saddle Construction and Checking Used Saddles by Charles Morrish
The importance of a saddle that fits a horse perfectly and that suits the rider should never be underestimated. Understanding how a saddle is made and knowing what to look for in a second-hand one may save both you and your horse discomfort in the future.

FEATURED STUD

The Whalton Stud by Jenny Grzybowski
Jenny visits the home and stud of Jo MacInnes, long-time stalwart worker behind the scenes at the BHS and owner of two outstanding stallions, Java Tiger and Kilvington Scoundrel.

FEATURED BREED

The American Saddlebred - Exploding the Myths Part II - Training by Cheryl Lutring
Cheryl sets the facts straight about how the American Saddlebreds achieve their spectacular gaits and action and explains how their conformation and natural predisposition enables their owners to develop their unique talents and to achieve 'the look' so desirable in the showring.

GENERAL FEATURES

America's Golden West The Cowboy - the Legend and the Reality by Jim Oltersdorf
The cowboy is 'history' - or is he? Enjoy Jim Oltersdorf's superb evocative photographs and his tribute to the cowboy, his horse and a way of life. The stuff of legend, yet one that still exists today - truly one of America's greatest treasures.

Go West Young Man (and Woman) by John Ruler
You will be so inspired by Jim Oltersdorf's 'riding the range' that you will probably want to go and experience it for yourself. We asked leading riding holiday writer, John Ruler, to seek out your best options.

The Story of Titch by Shirley Wilsher
The true story of Shirley's dedicated struggle to rear an injured foal to healthy adulthood - against all the odds and despite the gloomy expectations of the veterinary world. In their darkest hour, when Shirley questioned whether she was doing the 'right thing' for Titch, a healer came to their aid and this is a story with a happy ending!

My Fanatical Obsession with Horses by Louise Couch Fourteen year old Louise tries to explain the (often) unexplainable … just why she loves horses so much despite their very best efforts to deter her. This article represents the true essence of 'The Joy of Horses'.

Stallion Magic : The Pleasures and Pitfalls of Keeping an Entire by Lesley Skipper
Is gelding horses merely a matter of habit and social convention? In many countries it is not standard practice yet stallions generally remain tractable and rideable - where are we going wrong? Lesley examines both equine and human behaviour and offers suggestions as to how a well-managed stallion, allowed normal social stimulus, can be a joy to own.

IBERIAN HORSES

Spanish or Portuguese? Andalusian or Lusitano? What's in a Name? by Sylvia Loch
Author of 'The Royal Horse of Europe', Sylvia explains the origins of the Iberian horse and how it has developed into what we now call the Spanish Purebred Horse and the Lusitano from Portugal.

Iberian Horses at Royal Windsor Horse Show by Sue Wingate
Good classes for ridden Portuguese and Spanish horses at Windsor - the first major show of the season.

CLASSICAL RIDING

Open Day at Turville Valley Stud by Sue Wingate
The renowned Stud opened its doors and gave visitors wonderful displays of classical riding and demonstrations of training horses to a high level using in-hand work. The children also played their part in the entertainment!

It's All in the Right Shoulder by Christine Pearson
Christine pursues her quest for perfecting her riding skills, courtesy of another lesson with Minette Rice-Edwards, who helps her overcome the sort of problems that beset most riders - especially those who are unaware of the effect of their bodyweight on their horse's movement. Minette's teaching offers practical and effective solutions that can benefit all thinking riders.

HEAVY HORSES
A Dealer in Percheron Horses : Gerald George Powell 1868 - 1947 by Nancy Powell
Gerald Powell was an Englishman living in France at the end of the 19th/early 20th centuries, who became an expert on the indigenous working horse - the Percheron. Respected for his good judgment he became a major dealer in these horses (and other working horse breeds) and arranged the export of many thousands to the 'New World'. This is a profile, written some years ago by his daughter Nancy.
SCHHA Spring Working & Progress Day by Tony Baker
One of the first events of the year for Southern Counties Heavy Horse enthusiasts. Even a last minute change of venue did not deter those with 'new' equipment to try out. Robert Sampson's twelve horse hitch made a spectacular debut.
Midland Counties Spring Working by Brian Robinson
Local Working Horse enthusiasts had an enjoyable day in the lovely setting of Shugborough Hall.

Heavy Horses at Royal Windsor Show by Sue Wingate
