How to be correct in selecting tack and costume for Spanish ridden classes

In the UK, at least, Iberian Horse ‘Parade’ classes are becoming increasingly popular.  They are real crowd pleasers, not least because the two main breeds (the Lustano and the Spanish PRE) are naturally showy Horses.  Combined with their unusual tack, the rider’s costume and the opportrunity to demonstrate more advanced and high school movements generally intrigue spectators.  Show organisers recognise this and gradually more such classes are appearing in Show schedules.

It has become noticeable however that the interpretation of what constitutes “correct apparel” has become more and more questionable – not least to the non-Spanish (or Portuguese) judges often called upon to assess such classes.  A notable example was the winner of the Parade Class at a very high profile show in 2006 who won wearing culottes!  For lady riders they have become commonplace but they are only intended for promenading and the Feria…

It is high time that set codes are recognized and adhered to, wherever competitions are being held.  Unless this happens soon such classes run the risk of degenerating into nothing more than a fancy dress show.

In the following article Sue Lüst has explained in detail all the dress codes relating to Spanish ridden horses.  These are completely up to date at the time of publishing and can be relied upon for reference when choosing riding attire for yourself and tack for your horse.

Have fun!
