Iberian Horses At Cranleigh And Chertsey

AGRICULTURAL SHOWS

In a way it was remarkable that these two agricultural shows in Surrey just a week apart should both stage classes for Iberian horses - given that they are minority breeds. Hopefully it is the beginning of a trend!

There was an excellent class of 14 pure or part-bred Lusitanos at the Cranleigh Agricultural Show on 2nd August; the organisers must have been delighted to have so many of these horses under saddle in the ring and the class was divided into English or Foreign Style dress sections.

Fresh from giving a clinic at El Bustan the day before, Bento Castelhanho was very much the star of the show. Now turned out in traditional Portuguese style, Bento was riding Sherene Rahmatallah s grey stallion Jardineiro and presented a picture of harmony and elegance - the quintessential Lusitano horse and rider.

Bento Castelhanto & Jardineiro display their skills at Cranleigh Show.

Sue Baker & her stallion 'Infinito' - winners of the English Dress ridden class.

Whilst Bento was the star guest in the arena, the actual class was headed by Lizzie Haws on Ilustrada who pulled up a couple of places on her original line-up position by virtue of her well ridden show and they were adjudged the winning combination in Foreign Style turn-out. The English dress section was won by Sue Barber on her super bay stallion Infinito. Imported from Portugal, this is a lovely example of the breed and Sue will surely have years of pleasure with him.
